Announcing the Global Research Platform Workshop

17 May 2019 -- The Global Research Platform Workshop will be held on 17-18 September 2019 at the Calit2—Qualcomm Institute, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, United States

International scientific initiatives collaborate on building, accessing and analyzing data from one-of-a-kind advanced instruments in unique locations around the globe, connected to remote computational, data storage, and visualization systems at speeds of Gigabits and Terabits per second. The Global Research Platform (GRP) is an evolving effort focused on design, implementation, and operation strategies for next-generation distributed services and network infrastructure, including interoperable Science DMZs, on a global scale, to facilitate data transfer and accessibility.

The GRP Workshop will highlight global science drivers and their requirements, high-performance data fabrics, and distributed cyberinfrastructure, including advanced networks customized to support scientific workflows. This Workshop will bring together researchers, scientists, engineers, and network managers from U.S. and international research platform initiatives, to share best practices and advance the state of the art.

Details about the Workshop as well as registration and hotel information will be announced in early June.

The Global Research Platform is an outgrowth of several U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) funded efforts, including the "The Pacific Research Platform" (NSF award #OAC-1541349) and "Toward the National Research Platform" (NSF award #OAC-1826967) to UC San Diego, and the "StarLight Software Defined Networking Exchange” (NSF award #OAC-1450871) to Northwestern University. The GRP also collaborates with the evolving planning efforts by the Asia Pacific Research Platform and all other emerging regional, national, and continental efforts.

Agenda

Note: Americas' Research Platform (AmRP) (formerly GLIF Americas) is an OPTIONAL meeting to be held the morning of Tuesday, 17 September 2019.

Tuesday, 17 September 2019
Afternoon: Science Drivers
Evening: Reception and Demo Posters

Wednesday, 18 September 2019
Morning: Globally Distributed Data Fabric
Afternoon: Agile Programmable Networks for Data-Intensive Science

Demo/Posters are encouraged. We recommend demos be done in advance and posters be presented during the Tuesday evening reception describing the setups, technologies and resulting transfer speed results. DTNs at UC San Diego for experimental trials will be available. More details will be forthcoming.

Related Meetings

The Global Network Advancement Group (GNA-G) is a new organization resulting from the merger of GLIF and the GNA Tech initiative, to be effective 1 July 2019. The GNA-G is planning to hold a meeting immediately following the GRP Workshop, on 19-20 September 2019. Details will be posted on the GLIF Website

The Third National Research Platform (3NRP) Workshop will be held on 24-25 September 2019 in Minneapolis, United States and will focus on building and deploying an interoperable cyberinfrastructure in the U.S. on regional and national scales.

Additional Meetings in San Diego

The PRAGMA 37 Workshop will be held at UC San Diego the week before GRP, on 11-14 September 2019.

The eScience Conference will be held at UC San Diego the week after GRP, on 24-27 September 2019.
